ALL ABOUT MELVIN HUGH MONTS
Melvin Monts' Story
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Melvin was the 8th child out of 9 children born to Huetella and Juanita Monts. Known widely as "Turkey" or "Turk" for short, Melvin developed an early love for sports as he played baseball during his youth. Melvin attended Central High School in Little Rock, AR and graduated in the class of 1976. He soon moved to Los Angeles in 1984 and began working at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) shortly afterwards. He stayed at UCLA for over 30 years and retired on his 60th birthday, June 28th, 2018. He was often known as the heart and soul of his department, Office of Instructional Development, now called the Center for the Advancement of Teaching.
Melvin met Joyce Johnson in 1985 and afterwards were married in matrimony. From this union, Ms. Natasha Monts was welcomed in October of 1986. Melvin was a lover of all sports but particularly fancied football and basketball. The Lakers, Raiders, Dodgers, Bruins, Wolverines, and Razorbacks were some of his favorite teams. He loved college sports just as much as professional teams. It could be said that sports were Melvin’s religion.
Melvin enjoyed music of all kinds but his all-time favorite artist was Michael Jackson. He grew up listening to Motown, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Jackson 5 and much more. However, everyone knew that Melvin was Ice Cube’s biggest fan. Melvin enjoyed taking friends and family visiting LA to all the tourist attractions. He was truly a sweet, gentle, loving man who always had a smile on his face and spread positivity wherever he went.
Melvin is survived by his adult daughter, Natasha Monts Mann (Bashan), his three grandchildren, Ava (8), Malik (5), Khalil (3), his siblings Lester (Jeanne), Ernest (Michelle), Herbert (Dora), Jerome (deceased), Kenneth (Jennifer), Carolyn, Maxine, Howard (Angela). He has a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, friends, and former co-workers.
